TOKYO, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Japan's elderly people have accounted for 28.4 percent of its population, hitting a record high, Japanese government statistics revealed Sunday.

The country's seniors constituted 12.9 percent of Japan's labor force in 2018, also a record high, according to data released by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry.

Japan, with the world's oldest population, has 35.88 million people aged 65 or older, up 320,000 compared to 2017, according to the data released prior to Monday's Respect for the Aged Day.

The population of Japanese aged 90 or older stands at 2.31 million, including 70,000 at 100 years old or above.

Old people will account for 30.0 percent of the Japanese population in 2025 and reach 35.3 percent in 2040, according to forecast by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research.

A recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said that Japan's population aged 50 or older who are jobless could increase 29 percent to reach 59 per 100 workers in the country by 2050.

According to the study, the jobless situation in Japan's older population would strain public retirement schemes. Enditem

The newly-developed TQ-800 motor is expected to be used in a multinational interconnected high-speed train project, according to the CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Co., Ltd.

Adopting a fully-enclosed and directional cooling structure, the TQ-800 motor boasts high power density, excellent low-temperature adaptability and low maintenance cost, the company said.

The successful development of the motor breaks the monopoly of foreign technologies in this area and lays a solid foundation for the upgrade of rail transit technologies in China, it added.

The maximum speed of China's bullet trains rose to 350 kph when the Fuxing (Rejuvenation) bullet trains started operation between Beijing and Shanghai on Sept. 21, 2017.

The Fuxing trains are a substantial upgrade on the previous Hexie (Harmony) bullet trains. Entirely designed and manufactured in China, the Fuxing train is more spacious and energy-efficient, with longer service life and better reliability.

By 2100, global mercury rise would reach 6 to 7 degrees Celsius due to "rapid economic growth driven by fossil fuels", experts from the National Center for Scientific Researches, Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and weather agency Meteo France warned.

"Only one of the socio-economic scenarios (marked by strong international cooperation and giving priority to sustainable development) enables temperatures to remain below the 2 degree Celsius global warming target," they said.

They recommended "very significant mitigation efforts" to immediately cut greenhouse gas emissions to reach carbon neutrality over the globe by 2060.

"The intensity and frequency of heatwaves have increased in recent decades. This trend will continue for at least the next two decades, regardless of the scenario considered," they noted.

In France, two separate heatwaves this summer, in June and July, had brought record-breaking temperatures to the country's most regions, with temperature of 46 degrees Celsius recorded in the south on June 28.

The unseasonably hot weather caused 1,500 more deaths than usual in the country, according to official data. Enditem

U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday lowered interest rates for the second time this year amid growing risks and uncertainties stemming from trade tensions and a global economic slowdown.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), the Fed's rate-setting body, trimmed the target for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to a range of 1.75 percent to 2 percent after concluding its two-day policy meeting, following a rate cut in late July that was its first in more than a decade.

Trade policy uncertainty

Despite strong labor market and robust growth in household spending, "business fixed investment and exports have weakened," the FOMC said in a statement.

"On a 12-month basis, overall inflation and inflation for items other than food and energy are running below 2 percent," the central bank's inflation objective, it said.

"The main reasons appear to be slower growth abroad and trade policy developments -- two sources of uncertainty that we have been monitoring all year," Fed Chairman Jerome Powell told reporters at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

"Trade policy tensions have waxed and waned, and elevated uncertainty is weighing on U.S. investment and exports," said the U.S. central bank chief, who also noted that monetary policy can counteract weakness to some extent, but "there's a piece of this that we really can't address."

"We need to look through what's a pretty volatile situation," said Powell. "That means, not overreacting quickly, it means not underreacting too. That's what we're trying to do."

Bill Dudley, former president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, said earlier this month that the central bank needs to be "cautious" that it does not "inadvertently enable the president's trade war with China."

U.S. President Donald Trump again lashed out at the central bank shortly after the rate cut announcement, saying in a tweet that "Jay (Jerome) Powell and the Federal Reserve Fail Again. No 'guts,' no sense, no vision! A terrible communicator!" The president has repeatedly demanded a larger cut.

In response to a question regarding Trump's comment, Powell reaffirmed the central bank's independence. "I assure you that my colleagues and I will continue to conduct monetary policy without regard to political considerations. We're going to use our best judgment based on facts, evidence and objective analysis in pursuing our goals," he said.

Growing divide within Fed

Three of the 10 members of the committee voted against the quarter-point rate cut decision, highlighting growing split among monetary policymakers. "The last time we saw three dissenting votes occurred in September 2016," said Diane Swonk, chief economist at Grant Thornton, a major accounting firm.

As in July, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston President Eric Rosengren, and Kansas City Fed President Esther George "preferred" to maintain the target range for the federal funds rate at the previous level. St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard, meanwhile, demanded a larger cut, by 50 basis points.

When asked about how he viewed the divided opinions, Powell said at the press conference that this is difficult judgement, and such divisions are "nothing but healthy."

A conservation initiative by a global Chinese firm has won the 2019 Champions of the Earth award, the UN highest environmental honor, according to a statement from UN Environment (UNEP) issued on Thursday in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Ant Forest, a green initiative on the world's leading payment and lifestyle platform Alipay, was honored on Thursday for turning the "green good deeds of half a billion people" into real trees planted in some of China's most arid regions.

The UN agency recognized Alipay Ant Forest in the 'Inspiration and Action' category, where the firm beat dozens of other competitors. Ant Forest, which was launched on Alipay by Ant Financial Services Group, promotes greener lifestyles by inspiring users to reduce carbon emissions in their daily lives and protect the environment.

Alipay Ant Forest users are encouraged to record their low-carbon footprint through daily actions like taking public transport or paying utility bills online. For each action, they receive 'green energy' points and when they accumulate a certain number, an actual tree is planted. Users can view images of their trees in real-time via satellite.

Since its launch in August 2016, Ant Forest and its NGO partners have planted some 122 million trees in China's driest areas, which include regions in Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Qinghai and Shanxi. The trees cover an area of 112,000 hectares, with the project becoming China's largest private sector tree-planting initiative.

"Alipay Ant Forest shows how technology can transform our world by harnessing the positive energy and innovation of global users," said Inger Andersen, executive director of UNEP, in a statement issued on Thursday.

"Although the environmental challenges we face are daunting, we have the technology and the knowledge to overcome them and fundamentally redesign how we interact with the planet. Initiatives like Alipay Ant Forest tap into the best of human ingenuity and innovation to create a better world," she added.

Jing Xiandong, the chairman and chief executive officer of Ant Financial, said in a statement that the firm is honored to receive the environmental award.

"Alipay Ant Forest reflects our belief that technology can and should be harnessed for social good. We are grateful to our many users and partners who have joined our efforts to plant 122 million trees and advance a shared vision of sustainable and inclusive development. Alipay Ant Forest's popularity shows that the public is ready to take action to combat climate change," he added.

Champions of the Earth is the UN's flagship global environmental award, established by UNEP in 2005 to celebrate outstanding figures whose actions have had a transformative positive impact on the environment.

From world leaders to environmental defenders and technology inventors, the award recognizes trailblazers who are working to protect our planet for the next generation.

Alipay Ant Forest is among five winners this year, with the other categories being Policy Leadership, Entrepreneurial Vision and Science and Innovation. The 2019 laureates will be honored at a gala ceremony in New York on Sept. 26 during the 74th UN General Assembly.

The Champions of the Earth awards have previously recognized Chinese innovations and change-makers, particularly in the fields of tackling pollution and desertification.

Last year, the Zhejiang Green Rural Revival Program won the award for inspiration and action for its work to regenerate polluted waterways and damaged lands; and in 2017, the Saihanba Afforestation Community was recognized in the inspiration and action category for transforming degraded land on the southern edge of Inner Mongolia into a lush paradise.

The five satellites were launched by a Long March-11 carrier rocket at 2:42 p.m. (Beijing Time).

The satellites belong to a commercial remote-sensing satellite constellation project "Zhuhai-1," which will comprise 34 micro-nano satellites, including video, hyperspectral, and high-resolution optical satellites, as well as radar and infrared satellites.

The carrier rocket was developed by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology, and the satellites were produced by the Harbin Institute of Technology and operated by the Zhuhai Orbita Aerospace Science and Technology Co. Ltd.

Thursday's launch was the 311th mission for the Long March series carrier rockets.

The newly launched satellites comprise four hyperspectral satellites with 256 wave-bands and a coverage width of 150 km, and a video satellite with a resolution of 90 centimeters.

The Zhuhai-1 hyperspectral satellites have the highest spatial resolution and the largest coverage width of their type in China.

The data will be used for precise quantitative analysis of vegetation, water and crops, and will provide services for building smart cities, said Orbita, the largest private operator of hyperspectral satellites in orbit.

The company aims to cooperate with government organizations and enterprises to expand the big data satellite services.

On June 15, 2017, the first two satellites of the Zhuhai-1 constellation were sent into space, making Orbita China's first private listed company to develop and operate a satellite constellation.

On April 26, 2018, four hyperspectral satellites and a video satellite of the Zhuhai-1 constellation were put into orbit.

The eight hyperspectral satellites already in orbit can cover the globe in 2.5 days, greatly improving the remote-sensing data collection capacity of the constellation, said the company.

The company is also developing a national satellite big data application platform to service sectors such as natural resources, ecological environment, emergency management and traffic management, said Yan Jun, chairman of Orbita.
